Here’s my take on Can You Keep A Secret? by Sophie Kinsella.

BLURB

Nervous flyer Emma is sitting on a turbulent plane. She really thinks that this could be her last moment. So, naturally enough, she starts telling the man sitting next to her – quite a dishy American, but she’s too frightened to notice – all her secrets. How she scans the backs of intellectual books and pretends she’s read them. How she’s not sure if she has a G-spot, and whether her boyfriend could find it anyway. How she feels like a fraud at work – everyone uses the word ‘operational’ all the time but she hasn’t a clue what it means. How she once threw a troublesome client file in the bin. If ever there was a bare soul, it’s hers.

She survives the flight, of course, and the next morning the famous founding boss of the whole mega corporation she works for is coming for a look at the UK branch. As he walks around, Emma looks up and realises

It’s the man from the plane.

What will he do with her secrets? He knows them all – but she doesn’t know a single one of his. Or… does she?

REVIEW

Emma Corrigan is a marketing assistant at a top company ‘Panther corporation’. Like any other woman she wants to succeed in her works and show everyone around her that she can do something meaningful. And like any other woman she has some secrets of her own which no one knows about.

On her flight back from a business meeting, Emma spills all her secrets in front of a stranger. Things turn out hilariously intriguing as the stranger on the plane is none other than the company’s CEO Jack Harper.

Emma gets worried that Jack Harper might fire her and all her dreams to achieve something in her life will be shattered. For Emma, the shock comes when instead of firing her, Jack starts to take interest in her.

Eventually, Emma falls in love with Jack and she thinks he might love her back too. Things get messy when on a television interview Jack reveals all of Emma’s secrets publicly and betrays her trust. Does Jack love Emma back? Why does he reveal all her secrets publicly? Does Emma take her revenge? Does Jack have secrets of his own? Would they have a happy ending? Read the book to find out all.

Coming to the review,  Can You Keep A Secret? is a hilarious book. From the beginning to the end the author has filled the book with hilarious incidents. One such incident narrated in the book is when Emma boards the plane.

“The air hostess stares at me.
‘Hi. Erm …’
‘What?’
Why does she look embarrassed? ‘Sorry. It’s just … did you know that …’ She gestures awkwardly to my front.
‘What is it?’ I say, pleasantly. I look down, and freeze, aghast. Somehow my silky shirt has been unbuttoning itself while I’ve been walking along. Three buttons have come undone and it’s gaping at the front. My bra shows. My pink lacy bra.”

Emma is clumsy, thinks a lot, and always attracts accidents but that’s what makes her unique. She doesn’t think like the rest of her colleagues and that’s what attracts Jack to her. Emma might have secrets but she doesn’t think bad of others. Emma is like every other woman who doesn’t know how to manage their careers and doesn’t know how other people do it.

“I don’t know how other people manage their careers, I really don’t. Like my oldest friend Lissy. She’s always known she wanted to be a lawyer – and now, ta-daah! She’s a fraud barrister. But I left college with absolutely no clue. My first job was in estate agency, and I only went into it because I’ve always quite liked looking round houses, plus I met this woman with amazing red lacquered nails at a career fair who told me she made so much money, she’d be able to retire when she was forty.”

Jack has also been shown as a chilled out boss, unlike the typical bosses.

The book cover is pretty and intriguing. The story has a smooth pace throughout the book and has every element to keep a reader engaged.

The book tells us that it’s okay to be different and not to follow what everyone is doing. It’s perfectly fine to do what one feels is right.

“I’ve always had this deep down conviction that I’m not like everybody else, and there’s an amazingly exciting new life waiting for me just around the corner.”

The book is beautiful, the characters are lovable and it is something to read on your bad day.

I would like to give this book 3.5 stars out of 5.

Even though the book is a fun-filled ride and kept me interested throughout, I wish I could have read more about the romantic relationship between Emma and Jack. As a girl who loves romance I would have loved to read a bit more about it.

Conclusion

Can You Keep A Secret? is an adventurous book. It made me laugh, made me go angry at Jack just like Emma, and I totally loved those two throughout the book. To everyone who loves to read a chick lit with loads of fun elements, they should read this book. You will love the book and if not it will brighten up your day for sure.

And just like Emma we all have secrets as author herself has said:

“But the thing is, it’s completely normal to have the odd little secret. Everyone knows that.”

I hope your secrets are safe with you 😉
